Welcome to Mrs. Vines’ science class! I’m excited to be teaching your student about the amazing world of science. This is my third year teaching 6th grade science and my fourth year at GVA. We will be doing a number of hands on projects and experiments this year.
We will be using Elevate Science: Course One textbooks this year. These are interactive textbooks that students will be writing in. At the end of the year, students will be able to take these home and keep them for future reference. We will be learning about several fundamental scientific topics. Below is a schedule of topics. If any of these relate to your field of work, please contact me about setting up a class presentation.
- August: Introduction to Matter
- September: Solid, Liquids, and Gases
- October: Energy
- November: Thermal Energy
- December: Introduction to Earth’s Systems
- January: Weather in the Atmosphere
- February: Minerals and Rocks in the Geosphere
- March: Plate Tectonics
- April: Earth’s Surface Systems
- May: Living Things in the Biosphere
In order to ensure high levels of achievement, I have a policy that students may turn in late work until one week before the end of the quarter. Students may redo any assignment for a higher grade until one week before the end of the quarter. Progress reports will be sent home periodically. Additionally, look for upcoming information about signing up for Parent Portal to view your student’s grades. This year middle school will be using a new grading scale. The purpose of this change is to assist students in the transition to high school. The grading scale is as follows:
A=80-100% B=60-79% C=40-59% D=20-39% F=0-19%
